As Ethora Knows Him

He's easy to find and hard to pin down. Ask in any tavern near the corrupt border and someone will know him, or claim to — Velkss has a habit of turning up in small towns, staying long enough to be remembered, and moving on before anyone thinks to ask where. He works where there's work: pouring drinks, running odd jobs, whatever keeps him in a room for the night. He talks to everyone, flirts more than he means by it, and rarely stays anywhere longer than a season or two before the road calls him on.

He keeps animals — more than seems practical for a man who owns almost nothing else. Strays follow him, or he collects them; either way, wherever he's staying tends to fill up with more pets than the building was built for.

Every so often, someone tells him he looks like the prince from an old schoolbook illustration. He always laughs it off.

What the Archive Doesn't Say

Velkss is close to six hundred years old, and none of those years have been kind enough to leave a mark he'd volunteer. He was born a prince, the son of King Hidan, before the crown meant something worth hiding from. He fought in the war his father led, spying and slipping past lines no one his age should have crossed. When the war ended and the world changed around him, he adapted faster than his father did — a fact that eventually cost him a father, an uncle's expectations, and a name.

He removed two pairs of his own horns to stop being recognized. It worked. Centuries later, people who look at him see only a stranger who talks too much and never stays.

He is not aging and cannot die of age, though little else about him is invulnerable. In six hundred years he has married, raised children, and made friends — and outlived every one of them. He hasn't stopped doing any of it. He's just gotten better at leaving before it hurts as much.

He does not believe his father is beyond saving, whatever the rest of the continent has decided. He has never said this out loud to anyone.
